VOLUNTEER CASE STUDIES

Volunteering Case Study 1: Sarah

Length of volunteering at Young Devon’s Ivybridge Youth Enquiry Service:
I started volunteering in April 2007 doing 4 hours per week.

What motivated you to become a volunteer here?
I am a mum to two children, 2yrs old and 8 years old and I am studying counselling at City College. I decided that I wanted to work with young people in my community. As a young person I lived in a deprived area and this is the source of my motivation.

What have been your best experiences of volunteering at Ivybridge YES Centre?
I really enjoy learning and have had the following opportunities for training:
- Tackling Domestic Violence & Abuse
- Life stories seminar for E-learning.

I am booked onto:
- children and young people’s mental health
- health and safety
- child protection
- 1st aid

I look forward to coming in because everyone is so friendly and they have made me feel part of the team. It’s a relaxed environment.  I just love it all!

It is a good stepping stone in my career.
I wanted to get more experience to support my studies.

What have been your best experiences of volunteering at Ivybridge YES Centre?
Opportunities for training:

I have had great opportunities to shadow other workers. There is a brilliant team here. You can go to anyone for advice or support.

I am regularly supervised and recognised for my efforts and achievements. I have a personal development plan and my volunteering is tailored to my needs.
